Layla couldnât do this anymore. She didnât want to be here, especially when she was so conflicted about Killian; the last thing she expected to feel was pity for him. Layla watched as he bent over a fallen branch between the trees, grabbing for a bone on the ground and twirling it between his fingers. It was something to do with his hands as they decided what they needed to do. It was difficult not to look at it as it twirled between his smooth hands, and she imagined him spinning a knife in them instead. She watched as it spun, the silver light bouncing off the tree trunks. Layla blinked once and gasped when she opened them again. The knife was red, dripping with sticky red honey. Below him was a pool of blood- her motherâs she imagined- and she felt like she would drown in it if she looked at it hard enough. Kill glanced at her and she could have sworn that he was smiling. A cruel and wicked gleam in his eyes, the same that murdered her mother in the parking lot of her own dance studio only blocks away from her house.
Layla had to stifle a scream before she fell over.
âWhoa there!â She heard Killian yell, dropping the bone and rushing to her side. His eyes held so much worry as he reached out to caress her face. Laylaâs eyes snapped back open at the touch and she shot backwards. Her hands cut from splintered fragments as she scooted across the floor and she looked frantically from side to side, trying to find a weapon to use against him if she needed to. Her own blood coated the dirty bones beneath her.
âDonât fucking touch me,â she wheezed, out of breath. The worry on his face disappeared, replaced by a steely hardness. He held up his hands and took two very distinct, large steps backwards.
âIâm not going to hurt you.â He said again. He could to say that every chance he got, and she would never fully believe him. Layla wasnât sure she ever could. Even so, the way the words left him and hung in the air struck a pang of sadness in her. She had to do what she could to rid herself of that feeling once and for all. There was no room for pity in her heart, no matter what her feelings tried to tell her otherwise.
She ignored him as she stood, wiping her hands against her legs.
âSorry.â She said gruffly, her sanity returning to her. She watched as Kill shook his head, disbelief caking his expression.
âNo need.â His voice was deep and velvety. Had he not been her motherâs demise she could have thought him to be handsome. His hair was pulled back into a tightly woven knot, and the dirt that covered his face emphasized his rugged charm. âI deserved it.â
She could feel her mouth turning up in a smirk. âYeah, you did.â Fuck her and her pity, and her morbid desire to get to know this person.
